This vehicle appears somewhat standard in appearance but seems to have a personality all its own, down to its name, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. One that has been left to the side catches their attention and soon the Potts have a vehicle of their own. Commander Pott brings his wife (Mimsie) and twins (Jeremy and Jemima) along to find a vehicle that might suit them. After selling one of his ideas to a local confectionary, the Potts head out to purchase their first family car. Commander Caractacus Pott has a long history of inventing things, which provides limited success and forces the family to gather round in times of financial strain.
Burningham died in 2019.While most famous for his work on creating Agent 007, Ian Fleming wrote this classic children's story many years ago, which entertains as much as it captures the interest of many young readers. In addition to illustrating Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Jonathan Cape, 1964), he created Mr Gumpy’s Outing (Jonathan Cape, 1970), which was awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal, The Shopping Basket (Random House, 1980) and Granpa (Random House, 1984), which won the Kurt Maschler Award and illustrated The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Graham (Penguin/Puffin, 1983), among many other much-loved books. Burningham wrote and illustrated over 60 books for children which have been translated and distributed all over the world. Many illustration commissions followed, including iconic posters for London Transport, before the publication of his first book, Borka: The Adventures of a Goose with No Feathers (Jonathan Cape, 1963), which won the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration and heralded the beginning of an extraordinary career.
He studied illustration and graphic design at the Central School of Art and graduated with distinction in 1959. John Burningham was born in Farnham, Surrey, in 1936.
